How Mallkha got its name

It’s a short story and an interesting one as well. It is said that during the reign of Jehangir. A certain Mughal Subedar fell for a Hindu girl, but couldn’t get her to marry him. So he made a woman to appear before governor’s court, veiled, impersonating his love and plead that her father wasn’t allowing this marriage to happen.

All went well and the religious clerics of that time issued a fatwa that she can marry him without her father’s consent. After obtaining religious backing, he forced her to marry him.

Her father agreed to it without making any fuss about it, but asked for a 6-month period, to which Subedar gladly agreed. Her father meanwhile traveled to Agra to meet Jehangir and seek his help in this matter. Jehangir at once came to Kashmir and did a similar impersonation in front of that accomplice of Subedar who impersonated Hindu girl. To make her divulge all the secrets.

Later on, he held a court and punished the Subedar along with all the Mullahs who had issued fatwa in his favor. Subedar was beheaded and Mullahs taken atop Hari parbat fort and blown to pieces, tied to the canons.
